In all three games so far the Tigers – who are 2-1 – have kicked more behinds than goals, with their combined aggregate 42.57.
They got away with it in their first two games against Gisborne and South Bendigo when they won, but paid a hefty price against Castlemaine last week when beaten by seven points, despite having eight more scoring shots.
“We’ve brought in some more elements to goalkicking this week to give the boys more time at it, but really, it’s just the mental application,” Tigers coach Luke Beattie said on Friday.
“The shots we missed last weekend weren’t that difficult… it’s more the concentration that the boys need to be working on, rather than having 100 shots at goal at training during the week.
“They get that right and I’m sure they will be fine.”
Out of the Tigers side is ruckman Joel Stevenson, who returned last week for a game while the Southport Sharks had the bye in the NEAFL.
Maryborough is coming off a 70-point loss to Eaglehawk, with that result following a 208-point hiding from Sandhurst in round two.
“Our practice matches and rounds one and three have all had a similar formline… we’ve been competitive for periods and then have lapses and get heavily scored against,” Maryborough coach Shane Skontra said.
“After what happened against Sandhurst in round two it was good to get back to more of a competitive game last week.”
