While they haven’t coached teams to multiple premierships, when it comes to service to their sport and junior development, there’s been few better in any sporting code in central Victoria.
After 23 years of volunteering their time to coach central Victoria’s junior golfers, Boyd and Conder last month announced their retirement.
“It was time,’’ Boyd said. “It’s time for some fresh, younger faces to take over the clinics.”
Boyd and Conder’s free clinics have been an institution at Neangar Park Golf Club.
“When we started these clinics it was just for girls because there was no-one in the region teaching young girls the game of golf,’’ Boyd said. “We’ve had well more than 500 players come through the clinics since then. We’ve had a ball.”
Conder, who still plays off a handicap of six herself, said watching juniors improve their game was a big thrill.
“It’s all about the kids having fun and making sure they come back,’’ Conder said.
“It’s amazing when we’re out on the course ourselves and there’s players out there that we’ve taught and they’re hitting the ball longer than us.”
While Boyd and Conder have retired, the free clinics are still being run every Thursday at Neangar Park.
