A proposal for a rural medical school has again been overlooked in the federal budget.
La Trobe University and Charles Sturt University have been working together for three years to establish a Murray Darling Medical School, which would have campuses in Bendigo, Orange and Wagga Wagga.
About 2000 La Trobe University students in Bendigo are studying health. But central Victorians aspiring to become doctors must leave the region to gain their qualifications.
La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar said a rural medical school would address rural doctor shortages and give rural students a fair chance to study medicine.
“The Murray Darling Medical School is not just an investment in the wellbeing of our regions, it is an investment in regional jobs and economic growth,” he said.
“We will continue to work with our local members and the federal government to secure this critical piece of health infrastructure for our communities.”
