The Bulldogs were the team that snapped Strathfieldsaye’s winning streak at 39 with their 24-point victory at MyJet Oval in round three.
It was the Storm’s first loss since they were beaten by Sandhurst by 79 points in round three of the 2014 season
But it’s not the first time a significant winning streak has been ended in a Golden Square v Strathfieldsaye clash.
In round two, 2012, the Storm put an end to what had been 30-consecutive wins for Golden Square when they defeated the Bulldogs by 35 points.
Despite what was their first loss in 743 days, Storm co-coach Darryl Wilson says the group is positive and upbeat ahead of this Saturday’s home clash against Eaglehawk.
“We didn’t put huge expectation or pressure on ourselves to keep the winning run going… we took the games as they came and Square was just too good for us,” Wilson said on Wednesday.
“Their ball-usage and contested ball was a lot better than ours.
“Everyone thinks we’re shot and that we’ve lost a lot of players, but we’re still upbeat and happy about what we’ve got.
“The pleasing side is we’re getting game time into young guys like (Jake) Moorhead, (Riley) Hogan, (Harry) Crone, (Zane) Hoiles… we’re really excited about our next bunch of players.”
The biggest dampener for the Storm from last Saturday’s game was not the demise of their winning streak, but the season-ending knee injury to dynamic forward Lachlan Sharp.
The Storm have also lost recruit Michael Cooke, with the tight points allocation of 36 seeing him cleared to Foster. Cooke, a forward, was a four-point player.
“We weren’t able to work him in to the points side of things, so he made the decision to go… we always knew our points (allocation) was going to be low and we took a bit of a gamble with recruiting and it hasn’t quite worked for us, but we’ll move on,” Wilson said.
Another four-point recruit, Jye Sandiford, has also just been cleared to Charlton, while the Storm are also now likely to be without Vinnie Flood this year due to an overseas university opportunity.
On a positive note, Tom Dowd (hamstring) and Ash Trollop (back) are eyeing off their first games of the season.
