Triple J Unearthed band Jack and the Kids can hardly believe Groovin the Moo is this weekend.
The Bendigo band was announced as the local representatives for the regional festival two months ago and have been fiercely rehearsing ever since.
“We have probably rehearsed twice as much as what we would normally,” lead singer Jack Kennedy said.
“It’s been good to just to take our time. We haven't played gig since February and have been nutting out songs to get them sounding the way we want.”
Kennedy said after the announcement to the GTM line-up was overwhelming to start with.
“It was overwhelming but it was pretty exciting when you we got the call and heard our name read out on Triple J. Exciting is definitely the best word for it,” he said.
Jack and the Kids formed early in 2014 and quickly began establishing themselves in Bendigo’s music scene with supporting slots for touring artists like Kite String Tangle.
“It followed on from me playing a handful of solo shows and I slowly got the band together,” Kennedy said.
“Matt Thornton plays guitar and keys, Mark Hill was our original drummer and Lachie Prest is on bass.”
A line-up change has seen Braden Geyer step up to the drum set for the past 12 months.
Guitarist and keyboard player Matt Thornton had a difficult decision to make after the band locked in their GTM slot.
Thornton, plays centre-half forward for Sandhurst and will miss the match against South Bendigo this week.
“Bear kicked six last week and is very wanted man but he got out of it and is going to live the rock star life for a day. We might never get to again,” Kennedy said.
Ahead of Groovin the Moo, Jack and the Kids will kick off the weekend with a show at the Rifle Brigade Hotel on Friday night.
They will be joined by Josh Cashman, The Hiding and Tully from 6pm.
“We will keep it a quiet one on Friday night, just a couple of beers to ease the nerves,’ Kennedy said.
“The Rifle do good things with their carpark and turn it into a great scene.”
On Saturday, the band will officially go from GTM punters to performers.
“I’ve thought about that a lot,” Kennedy said.
“Last time I was there I saw The Jezabels playing in my home town which was surreal. To be chosen to pay at the same event is even more surreal.”
Jack and the Kids play at Groovin the Moo at Bendigo’s Prince of Wales’ Showgrounds at 11.45am.
Before that they play at The Rifle Brigade Hotel on Friday from 6pm. Entry is $10.
