The screening will be run by BreastScreen Bendigo, a “one-stop shop” service where Aboriginal women can have a Pap test and breast screen within a single appointment.
The project is run by the Cancer Council Victoria, the Bendigo and District Aboriginal Co-operative and Women’s Health Loddon Mallee.
Women’s Health Loddon Mallee nurse Elise Kornmann said increasing screening participation for breast, bowel and cervical cancer is an important way to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal people.
“We are fortunate in the Bendigo area to be able to offer this program to Aboriginal women, and the feedback we’re getting so far is that women are utilising this service and finding it useful,” Ms Kornmann said.
To make an appointment phone Women’s Health Loddon Mallee on 5443 0233 or Bendigo Aboriginal Health Service on 5442 4947.
