Dykes on Bikes club rolls into Bendigo

MELBOURNE Dykes on Bikes is urging local lesbians to sign up to the group.

President Chrissy Wells said the organisation, which formed about 18 months ago in Melbourne, was about more than just motorbikes.

“We want to put it out there that people from all over the place are welcome to be part of the team,” she said during a visit to Bendigo yesterday.

“We’re all here to support and help each other in times of need and when issues arise.

“We’ve ridden up from Melbourne to show that we support women from all parts of Victoria.”

While owning a bike is a plus, it’s not a prerequisite for joining the group.

“It’s mainly for lesbians who have an interest in motorbikes, but there are people who just want to be part of the group as associate members.”

The Dykes on Bikes movement started in San Francisco in 1976 and the Melbourne chapter has about 70 members.

“We’re aiming to get 100 members by the end of the year,” Ms Wells said.

“Part of our visit to Bendigo is seeing if there are any locals interested in joining and just letting the public know that we’re here.

“We feel there are people in the area that might want to get involved.” For more information, visit www.dykesonbikesmelbourne.org.au or email info@dykesonbikesmelbourne.org.au
