One City of Greater Bendigo councillor has dropped out of the race for Town Hall, at least five have confirmed they intend to stand for re-election and one may be a federal senator by the time October rolls around.
That is the playing field as the nine councillors consider their futures ahead of this year’s council election.
Councillor Lisa Ruffell has confirmed she will not run again, bringing an end to her eight years of representing the Whipstick Ward.
The former mayor is the only current councillor to rule herself out of the next election.
Councillors Barry Lyons, Rod Fyffe, Helen Leach, Rod Campbell and James Williams all told the Bendigo Advertiser that, at this stage, they will run at the next election.
Councillors Peter Cox and Elise Chapman said they were considering their options – although the latter is the lead Senate candidate for Victoria for the One Nation party at this year’s federal election.
Councillor Mark Weragoda could not be contacted for comment.
