The 29-year-old woman was questioned along with a 32-year-old man about the incident.
A police spokesman said the pair were brought in for questioning at the same time but released three hours apart – the woman at 6pm and the man at 9pm – pending further investigations.
“Neither are facing any charges at this stage and will continue to help police in their inquiry,” he said.
It is unknown what the man’s relationship is to the child but police were able to confirm that he is not a biological relation.
Police and paramedics were called to the High Street home on Tuesday, shortly before 11am, following reports of a medical emergency.
However, when they arrived they discovered the child suffering from head injuries and the incident was upgraded to an accident.
Acting Sergeant Mick McCrann said the child required urgent medical attention.
“While the child was stable at all times, the treatment required was of an urgent nature,” he said.
Police were later seen leaving the house with evidence bags.
The area was cordoned off with police tape. The 16-month-old was transferred from Bendigo Hospital to The Royal Children’s Hospital on Tuesday night.
A Royal Children’s Hospital spokeswoman reported the child as stable last night.
A police spokesman said investigations were continuing into the cause of the child’s injuries.
