Protesters gathered in front of a Bendigo pub today to oppose the One Nation federal election campaign for Victoria.
Party leader Pauline Hanson is due to talk this afternoon at the Shamrock Hotel alongside Senate candidate and current City of Greater Bendigo councillor Elise Chapman.
More than half a dozen police prevented the crowd of about 30 protesters from entering the hotel.
Kennington protester Adrian Hill said demonstrators had “run Hanson out of town” in 1998.
“Back then her message of fear was about an Asian invasion – that has proven to be completely untrue,” Mr Hill said.
“This time around she is vilifying Muslims… well we want to show that we won’t stand for her racist policies in this town.”
The protesters gathered in front of the Shamrock Hotel from about 12pm and chanted for about an hour before dispersing.
Speaking to the media later at the event, the One Nation leader dismissed the protesters as the “unwashed” left.
“Were they the unwashed university students who wouldn’t have a damn clue or the ones that are with their lefty views who have been brainwashed in our educatuonal system, are they the ones that cry democracy yet will not allow someone like me to have my say?,” Ms Hanson said.
