Structured in a similar fashion to the football academy launched by AFL Central Victoria last year, the netball academy will provide training for youngsters making their way in the game. The 40 players invited into the academy will receive a weekly elite level training program.
“We had over 130 players from across our region participate in the selections and it was an extremely difficult task to select players from such a talented group of athletes,’’ AFLCV partnerships and BFNL manager Carol Cathcart said.
“Approximately 20 netballers across all positions have been selected in both the 12-year-old program and 13-year-old program.”
Bendigo Bank, Bendigo Mazda and La Trobe University have signed on as supporters of the academy.
The objectives of the academy program are to:
• Increase the depth of talent within the region through exposing more players to a higher level of training, participation and coaching;
• Increase the standard of competition within the various junior leagues through up skilling players, giving them confidence to play at a higher standard of competition and develop an elite talent pathway;
• Complement association programs and influence the on-field behaviour and values of young players.
