The City of Greater Bendigo is calling on volunteers to help shape the future of one the city’s best-loved parks.
Active and healthy communities manager Patrick Jess said the city was calling on expressions of interest to join an advisory committee as it rolls out its Rosalind Park Recreation Reserve Precinct Master Plan.
“The committee will be used as a sounding board to make sure the community’s interests are represented as we move forward with this significant plan,” Mr Jess said.
“We’re looking for quite a range of skills – this is open to one and all.”
Advisory committee chair councillor James Williams said the plan involved proposals to reuse storm water to “green up” the hill on which the poppet head sits, open up cafes on View Street which look onto the park, recognise the areas Indigenous heritage and have cyclists and pedestrians using a Bendigo Creek pathway.
“Walking down View Street you may not realise there is this beautiful park behind all the old buildings,” Cr Williams said.
“We’d be looking to see cafes looking out into the park and to beautify those buildings as well.”
Cr Williams said he would like to see the former municipal baths redeveloped in a similar vein to Lake Weeroona. The baths were originally dug out for mining and are currently closed off to the public.
“One of the first projects might be the increased re-use of storm water on the hill... and one way we might look to revitalise that area is with native trees with significance to our Indigenous people,” he said.
Cr Williams said he would like to see members of the Dja Dja Wurrung community put their hand up to be on the committee.
He said another key element of the plan would be a proposal to extend the Bendigo Creek pathway through the CBD.
“We’d hope to have it stretching from Golden Square to White Hills and going through the park, which means people can make the commute into the city without crossing highways and busy streets,” Cr Williams said.
Councillor Peter Cox also stressed the importance of making the park a thoroughfare to the CBD.
“It’s about connectivity,” Cr Cox said.
“We want people to be walking through the park on the way to the CBD – not around it.”
Five committee membership will be drawn from across the Whipstick, Lockwood and Eppalock wards for a three year term.
Meetings will be held bi-monthly or otherwise by agreement.
Applicants will be required to respond to a set of criteria in their EOI.
Applications close 5pm, February 12, 2016.
