Joby Anthony Rowe, 23, appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning via video link.
Rowe is charged with the murder of Alanah Rowe.
The baby was rushed to a local hospital after suffering a reported coughing fit on August 29 at a Heathcote home.
She died the next day after being flown to Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition.
Magistrate Jennifer Tregent said she was awaiting the results of pathology and toxicology tests before proceeding with the hearing.
The matter was adjourned until Wednesday, March 2.
Rowe remains in custody.
