The former KLFM announcer passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71.
Mr Washington began his radio career at 3BO Bendigo when he was 18 years of age and soon after joined BCV-8 Bendigo.
He continued reading the late news while running the Golden Fleece Roadhouse in Golden Square with his wife, Helen, and later built and operated the Homestead Motor Inn in High Street.
His radio commitments expanded when he was approached to do the “Sound-a-bout” talk back program on 3BO.
In the ensuing years his radio career took him to Sydney and Whyalla before returning to Victoria as manager of 3HA Hamilton.
Mr Washington moved into television in the 1980s as an announcer, news reader, producer, director and then manager of STV8 Mildura.
He joined KLFM, which broadcasts on 96.5 FM in Bendigo and 106.3 FM in Castlemaine, last year, hosting the afternoon shows.
KLFM general manager Brad Geier said Mr Washington was a talented and popular announcer.
“He had golden tonsils – just a beautiful voice – and was just one hell of a nice guy,” he said.
“We are just so fortunate to have had Barry with us, sharing his wealth of knowledge.”
Mr Washington is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen, children Peter and Sarah and five grandchildren.
