Ms Aumair has appeared regularly as a duty solicitor and private practitioner in the Bendigo Magistrates’ and Children’s Courts since 2005.
Specialising in criminal law, children protection and family violence, Ms Aumair is also a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and sit on their ethics committee.
She chairs the Legal Aid taskforce, which is responsible for overseeing the review of legal aid funding in Victoria.
Ms Aumair’s focus on family violence is typified by her work as a research officer at the Victorian Community Council Against Violence, facilitating community consultations around perceptions of sentencing.
She will replace long-serving Deputy Chief Magistrate Dean Muling, who has retired from the position.
Victorian Attorney General Martin Pakula congratulated Ms Aumair on her appointment, and looks forward to her adding to the years of service she has already given to the state’s legal community.
“Ms Aumair brings significant experience to the role, especially in criminal law and family violence,” he said.
“I congratulate Ms Aumair on her appointment to the Magistrates’ Court, and I’m confident that she will make an excellent contribution to the bench.”
The last Bendigo solicitor to become a magistrate was Stella Stuthridge, former principal of Stuthridge Legal.
She became a magistrate in 2009, presiding mainly in Shepparton, allowing Ms Aumair to take on her position at the Bendigo law firm.
