Neangar Park Golf Club’s professional Erik Hendrix aims to increase the profile of the sport and introduce more youngsters to the game with a free junior clinic next month.
When Hendrix came to Bendigo six months ago he was shocked how few programs there were for young golfers.
As the PGA professional at Centenary Park for eight years, Hendrix used to train about 100 budding golfers and he hopes to eventually have a similar set up at Neangar Park.
“We’re targeting any kids who might have a hit and giggle, or kids that haven’t played at all,” Hendrix said.
“Studies have shown a decrease in kids playing golf. We’re trying to get golf happening around here.
Neangar Park has had many talented players come through its junior program, including Andrew Martin, Lucas Herbert, Tahlia Holmberg and Kristi Bilkey.
But Hendrix believes there’s more potential stars out there who just need the right coaching.
Neangar Park will provide all the equipment for its free clinic on the morning of Sunday, October 14 at the Averys Road course near Eaglehawk.
Young golfers will have the option to continue tuition following the event.
“We’ll have a set program in place for kids that want to have some regular tuition after school,” Hendrix said.
“Hopefully, with a bit of practice we’ll get them to a high standard by playing regularly.”
Bookings are essential for the free clinic via the Neangar Park Golf Club on 5446 8223.
