Harrower was left with little choice but to cut a devastated Scheer after the weekend’s WNBL pre-season tournament.
The 23-year-old had been trying to prove her fitness from a recurring left knee injury.
Scheer played all three matches in the tournament, but struggled noticeably in the final against Bulleen on Sunday – her third match in three days.
The Spirit’s physiotherapist recommended Scheer rest her knee for at least six-to-twelve weeks, forcing Harrower to cut the 6’2” American from the Spirit squad.
Scheer’s departure is a big blow for the under-sized Spirit, which has two tough double-header road trips to start the WNBL season.
Bendigo travels to Adelaide for its season-opener on October 5, followed by a match in Perth against the West Coast Waves the next day.
The Spirit will seek to replace Scheer with another import, but it is unlikely a player will be in Bendigo before the end of the month.
Harrower may look at recruiting an Australian player on a short-term contract until another import is found.
