The 41-year-old was at the venue with his wife when he was assaulted by a stranger in the toilets between 2am and 2.30am.
Police are calling for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to come forward with information.
“We are very reliant on witnesses. The victim was somewhat intoxicated and doesn’t know if he was king hit. He has no recollection of the assault,” Senior Constable Paul Tobin said.
“We are calling for witnesses, who may have come across the scene or seen people exiting toilets in suspicious circumstances around that time.”
Senior Constable Tobin said people came to the aid of the 41-year-old and took him to the rear yard of the venue to give him water.
“He had blood on his shirt, received some injuries to his head and spent the night in hospital,” Senior Constable Tobin said.
“The victim is unaware why (the assault) occurred. He is not aware of any incidents through the night and it seems a completely unprovoked attack.
“Because he didn’t see anything and can’t remember anything, he recalls nothing.
“He went into self-preservation mode and covered up. All he remembers is waking up in hospital at 8.30am.”
Senior Constable Tobin said there was no footage of the assault because it occurred in a toilet.
“We are yet to check CCTV footage (from the venue). It is hard to pinpoint without corroboration from witnesses.”
Witnesses are asked to contact Bendigo Police on 5448 1300.
