If you consult the Hansard, the question from shadow treasurer Chris Bowen to his counterpart Scott Morrison during Monday's question time is innocently titled "taxation".

But the bland label belies what the question was really about.

"The government has made it crystal clear that we have no interest in increasing taxes on superannuation either now or in the future," Bowen began.

"But on Friday the Treasurer backflipped and argued that, actually, superannuation concessions are not well targeted, undermine confidence in the system and need to be changed.

"Is this another example where the Treasurer says one thing in public but organises – for months – other things in private?"

Amid the tedium of what passes for a question time these days, this was a close as you'd get to a zinger.

Here, Bowen had cleverly used Morrison's official portfolio responsibilities to have a crack at him about reports that Malcolm Turnbull offered him the Treasurer's job way back in February.

In his answer, Morrison talked only about tax and conveniently ignored any other implications – as one would expect him to do.

But this didn't stop Bowen having another crack shortly after in a question titled, "economy", which ended in a riff on how Turnbull "knifed" Abbott.

With Bill Shorten away in Paris, it has been up to others in the Labor caucus to jump on the "what really happened with the coup train".

Labor frontbencher Sam Dastyari was out on the entrance doors to Parliament earlier that morning in howls of outrage about the contents of Fairfax Media reports.

The fact that there was a phone call between Turnbull, Morrison and Julie Bishop before the February leadership spill this year (where Turnbull is reported to have offered ScoMo the Treasury) was "extraordinary," the NSW senator said.

"What you have here is pre-mediated, planned," Dastyari admonished.

"I never thought I'd be the one to say it, but I actually have a little bit of sympathy for Tony Abbott."

Dastyari then observed that the Liberal Party had been "tearing themselves apart" with the leadership change.

On Tuesday, Labor frontbencher Stephen Jones kept up the charge.

"We know that Malcolm Turnbull was incredibly ambitious in becoming Prime Minister. What we don't know yet is whether he's also been incredibly dishonest," he told reporters.

"I think Malcolm Turnbull needs to explain himself. I think some of the senior Liberals need to explain themselves."

Seriously?

When it comes to premeditated coups against sitting prime ministers in their first terms, Labor is the pot calling the kettle black, shiny and full of water.

Bowen himself was so much of a Kevin Rudd supporter that he quit the frontbench in March 2013 after that failed (Simon Crean) bid to dethrone Julia Gillard. And it was well known that he himself had been coveting the Treasurer's gig. Indeed, he was rewarded with the post when Rudd was finally and briefly remade PM.

And Dastyari, as the ALP's NSW general secretary between 2010 and 2013, was intimately involved in Labor's leadership machinations over the period.

In his own defence, Dastyari says that the difference between him and someone like Morrison is that, "I was at least up front and open about it."

But unfortunately for Labor, even though the Liberal leadership change is good political fodder for them on paper, any attacks they make in the area just fall flat.

They seem ridiculous.

Because whatever the Liberal Party has done, Labor has already been there and bought the T-shirt. Twice.

And if you want to get technical about it, so far the Libs have been a lot better at keeping their infighting internal, instead of serving up eye-scrunching character assessments of each other for all the world to see.

When a prime minister gets replaced outside of an election, the public have a right to know how and why the leadership changed.

But Labor doesn't have a right to hop on its high horse about it.
