The disease affected her entire body and it addled her brain. 

She believed the TV remote was her phone, and walked around with batteries in her hand, thinking they were car keys. These are quirky little moments during her illness that she and her daughters Livinia and Marni can laugh about now, but at the time, it left Ms Clymo confused and disconcerted. 

Three times she was called to travel to Melbourne immediately - a liver was available for transplant. Twice she was in the hospital gown, ready and waiting, only to be left disappointed. 

In one case, the liver only had a 10 per cent chance of success and couldn’t be used. In the other, a man in South Australia, in intensive care, needed it more urgently than her. 

The fourth liver was hers – her daughters held her by each hand before the seven-hour operation. 

Diagnosed in September last year, doctors told her if she hadn’t had her health checked, she would have had mere weeks to live. 

For Ms Clymo, the past year has been a blur of medical appointments, blood transfusions, bone density scans and injections. At one point, she had nine litres of excess fluid drained from her body. 

“Thinking back over every symptom that I had and how bad I felt, to now, I just feel I can conquer anything … I still wake up in the morning and I can’t believe it’s over.”

A family history of a fatty liver, in conjunction with the affects of alcohol, lead to a diagnosis of liver cirrhosis – where healthy cells are replaced by scar tissue leaving it unable to function. 

“I was not drinking to excess, but alcohol was clearly affecting me really badly,” she said. 

She went on a waiting list for a liver in March, and was lucky to receive one six months later. 

Ms Clymo is urging people to think about donating their organs. Her donor has renewed her life and given her the chance to see her daughters grow up.
