HUNTLY-NORTH EPSOM v SANDHURST
SANDHURST picked up from where it left off with the ball last week to again rip through Huntly-North Epsom and secure the Bendigo District Cricket Association’s first outright win of the season on Saturday.
Having ended day one at 6-192 last week in reply to Huntly-North Epsom’s 61, the Dragons immediately declared on Saturday with a lead of 131 at Poyser Motors Oval.
Like a week earlier, the Power were unable to combat the spin twins of captain Craig Howard and Liam Bowe, who combined to take all 10 second innings wickets between them as Huntly-North Epsom was bowled out for 84 in the 52nd over.
Leg-spinner Bowe warmed up for this week’s Under-19 National Cricket Championships where he will represent Victoria with a 10-wicket haul for the match.
On the back of his 4-18 last week, Bowe snared a career-best 6-28 off 16 overs for the Dragons, giving him a match-haul of 10-46 off 22.3 overs.
Howard bagged 4-23 off 21.3 overs for a match return of 7-46 off 41.3 overs, including 22 maidens.
Only opener Brodie McRae (39 off 92) scored in double figures for the Power, who having one stage been 0-52 lost 10-32 in another capitulation.
Across the two innings in which they made just 145 runs, the winless Power lost a wicket every 26.4 balls, while 17 of their 20 dismissals were for single-figure scores.
STRATHDALE-MARISTIANS v EAGLEHAWK
Strathdale-Maristians is the only undefeated team after five rounds following its 95-run win over Eaglehawk at All Seasons Oval.
Chasing the Hawks’ 175, the Suns passed their target five wickets down before ending the day at 6-269.
All eight Suns’ batsmen scored at least 17.
The Hawks gave themselves a glimmer of hope when they had the Suns – who started the day 0-35 – at 3-81, with Andrew Hosking (20 off 52), Jack Neylon (33 off 79) and Jono Davidson (17 off 38) all out.
However, a 55-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Cameron Taylor (29 off 86) and Ben DeAraugo (55 off 139) put the Suns back in control and on track to their 16th-consecutive win.
All-rounder DeAraugo cracked seven boundaries in his second-consecutive half-century.
In his first innings of the season-proper, Nick Baker – batting at No.7 – top-scored for the Suns with 64 off 89 that featured nine boundaries.
Opening bowlers Richard Tibbett (2-65 off 25) and Shaun Knott (2-73 off 22) bowled 47 of the Hawks’ 93 overs between them, taking two wickets each, while Cam McGlashan (1-16 off 9) was economical.
WHITE HILLS v BENDIGO
White Hills bounced back from consecutive losses with a 94-run win over Bendigo at Glen Loddon Homes Oval.
The Demons – who had lost their previous two games to Bendigo United and Eaglehawk – successfully defended their score of 290, with the Goers all out for 196 in the 73rd over.
Bendigo looked in a position to challenge the Demons’ imposing total when it had worked its way to 1-120, with captain Adam Ward and Kyle Chant both well set at the crease.
However, the dismissal of Ward by Demons’ skipper Mitch Winter-Irving triggered a flurry of wickets in which the Goers last their last eight for just 76 runs.
Winter-Irving removed the Goers’ top three batsmen – Chant (56 off 130), Ward (49 off 80) and Craig Pearce (17 off 74) in finishing with figures of 3-44 off 17 overs.
Travis Colley also bowled well in taking 4-39 off 18.5 overs and Sam Farmer (2-41 off 15) chipped in with two.
Wicket-keeper Sam Stagg took four catches for the Demons, whose nine of the 10 wickets were caught.
Apart from Chant and Ward, the only other player to make more than 20 for the Goers – who are now 2-3 - was Alex Pearson (34 off 58).
STRATHFIELDSAYE v BENDIGO UNITED
An inspired bowling performance from Darren Kelly proved the catalyst for Strathfieldsaye successfully defending its 210 against Bendigo United.
Kelly – in his second game since earning a call-up into the Jets’ first XI – was the seventh bowler used, but brought about the downfall of the Redbacks with a six-wicket haul at Flight Centre Park.
Kelly bagged 6-36 off 17.5 overs to spark a collapse in which the Redbacks fell from 2-96 to all out for 170.
Kelly’s consistent line was shown by four of his wickets being catches by wicket-keeper Jack Stubbs.
Stubbs finished with six catches and now has 16 dismissals for the season.
Having taken 3-8 off 9.2 overs against Eaglehawk the previous round, Kelly now has figures of 9-44 off 26.5 overs in his two first XI games.
Chris Cullen (2-20 off 15) picked up the two early wickets of Redbacks’ openers Ben Gunn (5) and Corey Bicknell (8).
Stephen Brown (2-40 off 21) claimed the other two wickets for the Jets, who improved to 4-1 with the victory.
Bendigo United hasn’t missed a finals series since 2001-02, but that record is now looking in jeopardy, with the Redbacks having won just one of their first five games.
Mark Di Fede (45 off 92) and Riley Treloar (40 off 99) were the best of the Redbacks’ batsmen, putting on 66 for the third wicket.
But the demise of Di Fede by Kelly off the first ball after tea would ultimately signal the beginning of the end for the Redbacks.
GOLDEN SQUARE v KANGAROO FLAT
Golden Square won its first game of the season, overhauling Kangaroo Flat’s 9-183 to win by 29 runs at MyJet Oval.
The game had been in the balance when the Roos had Square 5-98, but a sixth-wicket partnership between Scott Trollope and Jason Johnson steered the momentum back in favour of the home side.
They added 63 for the sixth wicket as Golden Square went to to compile 212.
The hard-hitting Trollope cracked 11 fours and one six in top scoring with 79, while Johnson contributed 17.
Teenager Zane Keighran again batted well for Square in making 28.
Kangaroo Flat leg-spinner Chris Barber snared his second five-wicket haul in a row.
Barber – who last round claimed 5-45 against Huntly-North Epsom - took his tally of wickets for the season to 21 with 5-64 off 19.2 overs.
