Cox, 23, has this year switched from the Double Trap discipline to Trap and has her sights set on competing at next year’s Olympic Games.
She’s currently competing in the Oceania Championships in Sydney in what she’s using as a warm-up event for upcoming Olympic qualification competitions.
“Next year I have two chances to gain selection into the Olympic team – one in Brisbane in January and one in Sydney in March,” Cox said.
“To qualify I need to shoot a benchmark score of 71 in qualification at one of those events, and then win the same event.
“If I don’t do this and the winner of either event does not shoot a benchmark score, the two women who go to the Olympics will be selected by Shooting Australia’s High Performance Committee.
“It’s going to be a challenge to qualify as Australia has a really strong women’s Trap team at the moment.
“I’ve got a few little technical things I’m working on in the lead-up, but it’s definitely exciting to think there is a chance I could go.”
It has been a big year for Cox on the international scene competing in Trap.
Among her achievements have been winning gold in three out of four Australian Cups, and claiming a bronze in the other.
She started the year by taking out bronze in in the Grand Prix held in February in Cyprus, only two months after dislocating an ankle, while she has also had strong World Cup performances.
