The 67-year-old man was venting some LPG vehicle cylinders in a small yard beside his house.
At 6.45pm, the gas drifted into the air and ignited, due to the hot water service attached to the house.
The gas exploded and the man received extensive burns to his face, arms, legs, stomach and back.
Police say 50 per cent of his body was burned in the accident.
The man was taken to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne by ambulance in a serious, life-threatening condition, but is now critical and stable.
Kyneton Police, the Country Fire Authority and ambulance services all attended the scene.
There was minimal damage to the fence of the man’s home.
