A HOUSE fire in California Gully in the early hours of Wednesday morning started after a man fell asleep while smoking a cigarette in his bedroom, police say.

Emergency services were called to the house on Oswald Street, California Gully, just after midnight on Wednesday morning with reports contents of the house were alight.
The fire started in the bedroom of the house and damaged furniture and contents throughout the house.
Four CFA units attended the fire and brought it under control before it could spread to the main structure of the house.
The fire caused $30,000 damage and there were no reported injuries.
