A 52-year-old man has been fined for careless driving after he lost control of his Holden Commodore utility and flipped the car into a large storm water drain.
The man had only travelled about 50 metres from his Sparrowhawk Road home before crashing into the drain.
Witness Renee Ahern said the man, her sister’s partner, had pulled out of his driveway quickly.
“He took off and came over here and did a wheelie, lost it and ended up in there,” she said.
“He pulled out rather fast.
“It was pretty scary. I’ve never seen anything like that happen before.”
Ms Ahern said the man had nearly freed himself from the vehicle by the time emergency services had arrived.
“When we came over he was talking and he tried to get out himself,” she said.
“He was nearly out by the time everyone got here.”
A SES crew assisted in removing the man from his car.
Leading Senior Constable Pete Dyer said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
“I just think some inappropriate driving before taking the corner led to him to losing control of his car,” he said.
Leading Senior Constable Dyer said the man was very lucky to walk away unharmed.
“You don’t often go to crashes like that and see someone leave it walking.
“He didn’t even have a scratch.”
