Three teams from Girton Grammar progressed through the Tournament of Minds state final in Melbourne last weekend and will attend the national event.
Year 10 student and Tournament of Minds team captain Jacob Kaye said he was excited about representing the school at the finals.
“I went when I was 13 and had a ball,” he said.
“This time we get to compete against schools from New Zealand and Hong Kong as well.”
Teammate Lucy Holmes, also year 10, said she was overwhelmed when she made it through the state round of the event.
“I literally jumped up in the air, I was so excited.”
In 2010, a Girton team was crowned National Champion in Darwin.
This is the sixth consecutive year that Girton Grammar School Bendigo has sent teams to the national finals.
This will be Lucy’s fifth time at the finals.
“I was drawn to tournament of the minds because it’s not 100 per cent academic, it’s about problem solving and drama and acting,” she said.
“The national finals would be great to win.”
The three teams from Girton that progressed through to the national finals were: applied technology, secondary division; language/literature, primary division; and maths/engineering, secondary division.
Tournament of Minds aims to give students the experience of participating in creative problem-solving activities through role play and team work.
Teams of seven students in two age divisions (years 4 to 6 and years 7 to 10) are required to present solutions to given problems in the form of a skit.
They are also required to solve a spontaneous problem on tournament day. The national Tournament of Minds final will be held in Perth on Saturday, October 20.
