The October 10 event drew a diverse mix of classic car and motorycle owners and others just keen to support a worthy cause.

Daryl Lynch, who co-ordinated the event with fellow Bendigo TAFE diploma of community services student Maddie McCartin, said they were happy with the response.

The pair were moved to organise the fundraiser after learning Bendigo Foodshare was experiencing a shortage of supplies.

Each year, Foodshare volunteers help distribute much needed food to more than 80 groups across central Victoria, including schools.

More than one million kilograms of food is delivered to the region's most vulnerable residents during the year.

Entry to the car event was by donation of a canned or packeted food, or sanitary items, with about 300 kilograms worth collected on the day.

Mr Lynch said a further $80 raised through a sausage sizzle and face-painting would be used by Foodshare to help provide meals to about 60 children.

"We'll go around next year and do this again," he said.

"Next year the barbecue, the cars and the music will all be at the same time and we'll make it more entertainment friendly.

"We hope to double the amount we made this year.

"We realise that is one in three people in Bendigo are going through it (a food shortage), the community should support what is supporting them."

Foodshare's Gordon Scott said he was grateful for the donations from the event, especially given much of what was handed over would benefit disadvantaged children.

"I have a very soft spot for the schools, seeing some of the children come to school without breakfast, without lunch, without shoes," he said.

"There's a real issue there of looking after those children who are hard done by.

"We (Foodshare) put ourselves out here to fulfill that program to 100 per cent if we posibly can.

"Sometimes we can't make that with the availability of food products."
