The playful dogs in the care of the Kangaroo Flat Veterinary Clinic were happy to jump in a car for a photo opportunity, but don’t let their friendly faces fool you – they had a serious message too.
Every year the RSPCA is inundated with calls from concerned citizens that dogs have been left in hot cars.
On a 29 degree day, once the air conditioning is turned off, the temperature can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes, and 60.2 degrees 10 minutes later.
Parking in the shade and with the window slightly down is rarely good enough to stop a dog from struggling in the heat.
Even dogs left on the back of a ute can be at risk, if they do not have shelter or water nearby.
While the staff at Kangaroo Flat had yet to receive a call for a heat-stressed pet, each year they deal with dozens of cases – but every case is one too many.
