THIS summer Bendigo Addy sports writers Adam Bourke and Luke West are going head-to-head in a Supercoach style BDCA Challenge.
Bourkey and Westy will select squads of 14 players.
The team with the most points at the end of the season wins the battle and the unofficial title as the world’s best BDCA expert.
The rules of the battle are:
1. All 10 clubs must be represented in each squad.
2. The top 11 points scorers in each team count to the weekly total.
3. Six trades per squad for the season. One trade allowed every two rounds.
4. Points system: 1 run = 1 point, 1 wicket = 15 points, 1 catch = 5 points, 1 stumping = 10 points, 1 run out = 10 points.
5. Squads are to be made up of 6 batsmen, 1 wicket-keeper, 3 all-rounders and 4 bowlers.
6. Captains will be worth double points. You can only use a player as captain once.
7. Twenty20 games don’t count.
Now it’s time for the boys to pick their teams – Westy has won the toss and will pick first. The boys have to pick players from all 10 clubs with their first 10 selections – then it’s open slather.
Westy: 1. Adam Burns (Kangaroo Flat – all-rounder).
Bourkey: 1. Cam Taylor (Strathdale – all-rounder).
All-rounders looks to be the theme early. No great surprise with first two choices.
Westy: 2. Craig Howard (Sandhurst – all-rounder)
Bourkey: 2. Ben Devanny (Stathfieldsaye – all-rounder)
Westy: 3. Jake Higgins (Golden Square – wicket-keeper)
Bourkey: 3. Adam Ward (Bendigo – all-rounder)
Wow – strategic move by Westy with selection 3. Choosing a wicket-keeper/batsman early. Bourkey has now used up his three all-rounder picks. Batsmen and bowlers only from now on.
Westy: 4. Nathan Fitzpatrick (Bendigo – all-rounder)
Bourkey: 4. Ash Gray (Huntly-North Epsom – batsman)
Westy is out of all-rounders as well now. Bourkey uses the opportunity to grab the man expected to score most points for Huntly.
Westy: 5. Ben Gunn (Bendigo United – batsman)
Bourkey: 5. Shaun Knott (Eaglehawk – bowler)
Two genuine stars of the competition picked up there. Knott the first bowler selected.
Westy’s next 5 picks must come from Eaglehawk, Huntly, Strathdale, Strathfieldsaye, White Hills. Bourkey’s next 5 picks to come from Bendigo United, Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat, Sandhurst, White Hills.
Westy: 6. Rhys Irwin (White Hills – bowler)
Bourkey: 6. Scott Woodman (Golden Square – bowler)
Two young guns with the ball. Bourkey only has two more bowling spots available.
Westy: 7. Ben DeAraugo (Strathdale – batsman)
Bourkey: 7. Liam Bowe (Sandhurst – bowler)
Westy’s selection of DeAraugo as a batsman means his bowling points won’t count. Bowe took 30 wickets last summer – a repeat of that will make Bourkey very happy.
Westy: 8. Greg Lyon (Strathfieldsaye – batsman)
Bourkey: 8. Mitch Winter-Irving (White Hills – batsman)
Westy: 9. Josh Collinson (Eaglehawk – batsman)
Bourkey: 9. Heath Behrens (Bendigo United – batsman)
Last choice in the first 10 – Westy must pick a Huntly player, Bourkey must select a Kangaroo Flat player.
Westy: 10. Elliott Massina (Huntly-North Epsom – batsman)
Bourkey: 10.Brent Hamblin (Kangaroo Flat – batsman)
Top 10 all done. For the final four picks it’s open slather as far as clubs are concerned. However, Westy must pick 3 bowlers and 1 batsman. Bourkey must pick 1 wicket-keeper and 3 batsmen.
Westy: 11. Richard Tibbett (Eaglehawk – bowler)
Bourkey: 11. Linton Jacobs (Strathdale – wicketkeeper/batsman)
Westy: 12. Miggy Podosky (Bendigo United – bowler)
Bourkey: 12. Gavin Bowles (White Hills – batsman)
Westy: 13. Quinton Bentley (Sandhurst – bowler)
Bourkey: 13. Alex Pearson (Bendigo – batsman)
Westy: 14. Jono Davidson (Strathdale – batsman)
Bourkey: 14. Scott Johnson (Golden Square – batsman)
That’s it the draft is done.
Clarification – while the draft was unfolding we received news from Eaglehawk CC that Matt Fitt won’t be playing for six weeks. Bourkey graciously allowed Westy to change his wicket-keeper selection to Jake Higgins.
Final teams:
Westy’s squad – Adam Burns (Kangaroo Flat – all-rounder), Craig Howard (Sandhurst – all-rounder), Jake Higgins (Golden Square – wicket-keeper), Nathan Fitzpatrick (Bendigo – all-rounder), Ben Gunn (Bendigo United – batsman), Rhys Irwin (White Hills – bowler), Ben DeAraugo (Strathdale – batsman), Greg Lyon (Strathfieldsaye – batsman), Josh Collinson (Eaglehawk – batsman), Elliott Massina (Huntly-North Epsom – batsman), Richard Tibbett (Eaglehawk – bowler), Miggy Podosky (Bendigo United – bowler), Quinton Bentley (Sandhurst – bowler), Jono Davidson (Strathdale – batsman).
