A 27-year-old Donald man died in hospital after the white 2002 Toyota Corolla sedan he was a passenger in hit a tree on the Sunraysia Highway about 2am on August 7.
The 24-year-old female driver remains in hospital after she suffered serious injuries.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives seized a Toyota Hilux from a Birchip property on September 16.
A 23-year-old Watchem man has been interviewed and released pending further inquiries.
Investigators have now established that the injured pair was involved in an altercation with the occupants of a second car in Mullane Road, north of Watchem, before the collision.
During the alleged argument, a thong was left on the road which is believed to belong to the female driver in the Corolla.
It is alleged the two vehicles drove off from Mullane Road and shortly after, the crash occurred on the Sunraysia Highway.
Police believe the injured woman may have known the occupants in the second vehicle.
Detectives received a tip off from an unidentified caller who contacted Crime Stoppers and provided information crucial to the investigation.
The caller appeared to have intimate knowledge of the circumstances leading to the fatal crash and investigators are urging this person to call again.
