The Arthur Memorial Painting Guy Prize, a $50,000 acquisitive prize, will be on display until November 1. The exhibition showcases artworks by the selected finalists, and the winning work by renowned artist Guan Wei.

This prestigious and highly regarded acquisitive award was initiated by Allen Guy in honour of his late brother Arthur Guy.

Opening at the end of October is the anticipated exhibition Ink Remix: Contemporary Art from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, on display from October 31 to February 7, 2016.

In the West, ink art is often associated with traditional forms of Chinese painting and calligraphy. This exhibition offers new ways of thinking about ink as a contemporary, diverse form of visual expression.

This exhibition explores the idea of ink as a contemporary form of visual representation that connects the past, present and future. This is a touring exhibition organised by Canberra Museum and Gallery, with Bendigo Art Gallery being the only Victorian venue.

 At the gallery’s satellite social history exhibition space, Post Office Gallery, is the exhibition Theatrical Traditions: Stage and Screen in Bendigo, which opens on October 16. Western theatrical traditions came to Bendigo with fortune seekers in the 1850s. Since then, everything from amateur to professional, Shakespeare, opera, live music, eisteddfods, Vaudeville, musicals and comedy have graced the many stages in Bendigo. The beginning of the 20th century heralded the dawn of the motion picture, which by the middle of the century was the most popular form of entertainment. 

This exhibition looks at key moments, venues and people in the evolution of entertainment in Bendigo.

There are also some wonderful programs coming up this month including our special Victorian Seniors’ Festival event, A Pleasant Afternoon, this Thursday at 2pm.
