Police will monitor cyclists taking their details, which will then go into the draw to win prizes.

Cycle Concepts, Moroni’s Bike Shop, Bendigo Cycles and Bike Force Bendigo have supported the initiative and donated the prizes which will be drawn at the end of the month.

“We look forward to engaging with the cycling community in a positive way and encourage those doing the right thing,” a police spokeswoman said.

“Our bicycle patrol unit will also be attending the Ride2Work day breakfast in Hargreaves Mall and will have further information available about safe cycle initiatives.”

State Bicycle Operations Coordinator Sergeant Arty Lavos said if all road users looked out for each other then everyone would remain safe.

“We are all human and we make mistakes, sometimes it’s cyclists in the wrong and sometimes drivers,” Sergeant Lavos said.

“It’s not about placing blame, it’s about being aware of our environment and our responsibilities on the road.

“We want cycling to be a fun and more importantly safe activity for the whole family to enjoy.

“We want everyone to arrive home safely from their journey or outing and this can be achieved by being aware of other road users and looking out for each other.”

October is traditionally considered to be the start of the cycling season with a significant number of cycling activities planned.

Sadly the number of cyclists being injured in October has steadily increased from 136 in 2012 to 165 last year.

Failing to give way at intersections and car doors being opened into cyclist have been identified as the main causes of the injuries.

Police across the state will be on the look out to ensure all road users are sharing the road. Good cycling behaviour will be recognised and encouraged while anyone caught ignoring the road rules will be issued with appropriate infringement notices.
