The National Stroke Foundation, in partnership with Chemmart Pharmacy, has encouraged community organisations to take part in Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check.
High blood pressure is one of the most important known risk factors in stroke.
More than four million Australians have high blood pressure putting them at serious risk of stroke.
On average, 10-20 percent of participants discover they have high blood pressure at these free checks and receive a potentially life-saving referral to their doctor.
A stroke occurs when the supply of blood to the brain is suddenly interrupted due to a clot or burst artery.
Risks to high blood pressure and stroke include high blood cholesterol, being overweight, drinking too much alcohol, smoking, Type 2 Diabetes, an unhealthy diet and not exercising.
