From Monday, October 5, speed limits will drop to either 40-kilometres per hour or 60-kilometres per hour outside schools in the mornings, from 8am to 9.30am and in the afternoon from 2.30pm to 4pm.
“Slow down as kids stroll back to school,” a VicRoads spokesperson said. “Keeping children safe on our roads is everyone’s responsibility.”
The City of Greater Bendigo is rolling out its active travel plan to schools across the city. The push to encourage children to walk, ride or scoot to school is a major part of its Integrated Transport Land Use Strategy (ITLUS).
According to the city, 89 per cent of all households in urban Bendigo are within three kilometres of a secondary school and 58 per cent within one kilometre of a primary school.
Yet about 30 per cent of all traffic on the city’s roads around school drop off and pick up times is school related.
