Competitive banter was exchanged between the two crews at yesterday’s launch of the Emergency Services Cup, which brought together members of the Bendigo CFA, police, ambulance and SES.
The cup will be awarded to the service with the first five entrants across the finish line in November’s 10km run.
As last year’s winners, Bendigo police are already in training, keen to retain the trophy and bragging rights.
“As well as helping the local hospital, one of the main reasons I participate in this event is to prove that we are fitter than the other emergency services,” leading Senior Constable Michael Hobson joked.
“The only time I recall seeing the CFA team last year was when we received the trophy on the presentation days – that’s probably because they were behind us the whole way.”
These jibes are motivation enough, according to CFA members.
“We let the police team win last year,” CFA’s Lindsay Barry said.
“Several of our members stopped along the way to assist other people last year and we still nearly beat them. I’m very confident the cup will be making its way to the Bendigo Fire Station this year.”
Fun run co-ordinator Kiri Earl said the emergency services’ involvement provided an added dimension to the run.
“We all work together when our community is in need and this is another fine example of that co-operation and leadership, combined with some fun and competitive spirit,” she said.
