Senior Constable Andrew Steel said a 20-year-old male and a 20-year-old female were walking south on Chapel Street just after 3am on Saturday.
A white four-wheel-drive passed the pair and did a u-turn before stopping alongside them, in front of the Bendigo TAFE campus. There were four men in the car.
One man got out and punched the male victim to the head, causing him to fall to the ground.
He then kicked the victim multiple times while he was on the ground.
An older man – who was the driver of the car – also came over and the men shouted at the female to stop calling the police, which she declined.
The victim suffered a broken nose and chipped teeth from the attack and, after initially declining an ambulance, was taken to Bendigo Health later in the morning for treatment.
Senior Constable Steel said the men were unknown to the victim and the attack was unprovoked.
The attacker is described as about 30 years of age with pale skin, a shaved head and wearing a white t-shirt.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Bendigo Police on 5448 1300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
