Legatees and volunteers have been out and about across the region this week, selling badges from $5 to $200, teddy bears for $15, pens and bottle openers for $5 and wristbands for $3.
All proceeds from the annual Legacy Week appeal are used to support the families of deceased and incapacitated veterans.
Legatee Brigadier Steven Lee said the appeal had been as generously supported as always.
“We have had a number of selling points across Bendigo, but we also have a number of affiliate groups – Swan Hill, Echuca, Macedon Ranges and Kerang – out there selling badges,” he said.
“We’ve been very pleased with the response – people have really dug deep and put their hand in their pocket to make a great contribution to Legacy.
“It’s been wonderful.”
Legacy Week has run each year since 1942.
The organisation supports about 90,000 widows and 1900 children and people with disabilities Australia-wide.
Brigadier Lee said more than 700 descendants of veterans – mainly widows – were supported in the Bendigo region.
“There is still a lot of need to support those, largely women, but some children who are descendants of deceased veterans,” he said.
The Bendigo branch of legacy will celebrate its 90th anniversary next year.
