The Superoos have stormed their way into Saturday’s flag battle on the back of three cut-throat finals wins against opponents they had 1-5 records against during the home and away season.
Having ousted Calivil United (81 points in the elimination final) and top-three teams Pyramid Hill (24 points in the first semi-final) and Bears Lagoon-Serpentine (54 points in the preliminary final), the Superoos will hit Saturday’s grand final full of confidence they can serve it right up to the red-hot favourite Mean Machine.
“I’m under no illusion as to where Bridgewater is at, but we’ll go out there on Saturday aiming to continue to play the footy we have through the finals where everybody contributes equally, and if we do that we believe we can really challenge them,” Mitiamo coach Denis Grinton said on Friday.
The Superoos have come from nowhere – not only this year, but the past three seasons – to make Saturday’s grand final.
Apart from an eight-point win over Pyramid Hill on a Sunday in round four, there was little to suggest the Superoos would be the side that would face Bridgewater in the grand final.
The win over Pyramid Hill was the only home and away victory the Superoos had over a fellow top-five side, while they were also the only team to lose to Inglewood when beaten by four points in round two.
But the Superoos – who won just nine games the previous three years – have peaked at the right time, starting with a 70-point win over YCW in the last round that gave them the launching pad into the finals.
“We’ve played three tough games of footy in the finals and have a list that is fit and up and about, so we think that will hold us in good stead,” Grinton said.
“I’ve always had belief in the group – even after the loss to Inglewood – but we’ve had some real stability throughout the past four weeks, which has been important.”
The Superoos hadn’t made a change throughout the finals series until two forced changes on Thursday night with injuries to Adam Sims (knee) and Matt Grant (back), with their replacements James Rozynski, who brings some X-factor to the side, and Matthew Hind.
Mitiamo last won a flag in 2009, with Tom Grant and Joel Pianto members of that side that will play on Saturday, while the team also includes Nick Harris, who no doubt will have an extra spur of motivation to perform after he was last year left out of Bridgewater’s grand final team.
