The woman was asked to pay about $10,000 to the tax office.
She withdrew enough money to pay half, as advised by the telephone scammer.
Police said the woman transferred the money to a Western Union bank account.
Sergeant Mark Holloway said people needed to understand no government organisation would call demanding money.
“If in doubt, call the tax office,” he said.
People are getting calls from alleged ATO staff.
The offenders have told the victim of the possible ramifications if they don’t pay alleged outstanding fines. Police heard from about 10 different people on Wednesday morning with the same issue.
