They’ve won four in the past 10 years, including two under the guidance of current coach Ben Harvey.
What’s missing for the Braves is the SEABL national championship.
While the club won the ABA national title as it was then known in 2005, the Braves are yet to claim the ultimate prize - the SEABL national championship – and that eats away at the club’s passionate coach.
That’s why Harvey is treating Friday night’s south conference grand final against Mt Gambier as a preliminary final.
“Winning conference grand finals is important, but the SEABL national championship is what it’s all about,’’ Harvey said.
“We have unfinished business as far as the SEABL championship is concerned. We’d love to get another crack at it.”
To get back to the SEABL title game for the first time since 2011, the Braves must defeat Mt Gambier on Friday night.
It’s a task that’s easier said than done.
The Pioneers have only lost three games for the season and they’ve beaten the Braves three times from three games this season.
The Braves had their chance to topple the Pioneers in the semi-final a fortnight ago, but they capitulated in the final quarter.
Harvey was confident it will be a case of fourth time lucky on Friday night.
“We understand their game, we feel as though we did a good job two weeks ago, but we had a three minute lapse,’’ Harvey said.
“This time we’re better prepared again. It’s all about the little things – diving on the ball, communication, boxing out for rebounds. If we do those one per centers well we can win the game.
“We feel as though that loss two weeks ago has made us a stronger team.”
Harvey said it would take a team effort from his group to defeat the Pioneers.
“Last time against Mt Gambier we had four players who had average games but we still nearly won the game,’’ Harvey said.
“In past years we’ve probably relied on two players to do the majority of the work for us.
“This year we have a great team balance and we have a lot of weapons offensively and defensively.
“Josh Wilcher and Jordan Vandenberg can come in off the bench and score big points or make a huge impact defensively.
“When we get a contribution across the board we are very hard to defend.
“We’re looking forward to the opportunity and we’re very hungry to win. If we stick to the game plan, we’ll win the game.”
The Braves-Pioneers clash tips-off at the Icehouse in Mt Gambier from 8.30pm (AEST). The game will be streamed live on seabl.com.au
