The university gathered to celebrate – not just tolerate – the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transsexual, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) members of their student community.
Head of campus Rob Stephenson also hoisted the trans flag.
He said while significant inroads had been made for LGBTIQ people in Bendigo, there was still a long way to go towards equality.
La Trobe University queer counsellor Lachlan Slade said many students came from smaller rural towns, where homophobia and transphobia were sadly still a big issue.
Student Madison Hunt identifies as queer and said the day was about celebrating, appreciating and accepting people for who they are.
Together with other students, she is launching the “safe, friendly” group Rainbow Eagles for queer students and their allies on campus.
Drag queen Dolly Diamond also took to the stage and students busted a move on the dance floor.
