The former Kangaroo Flat and Bendigo Gold forward capped his first year with the Gold Coast Suns by being named in the NEAFL Team of the Year.
Downie played 16 games for the Suns reserves, kicked 30 goals and played a key role in the development of Gold Coast’s young list.
“I don’t think I dominated or did anything extraordinary for the year… I had a consistent season,’’ Downie said from the Gold Coast on Monday.
“I got the opportunity to play midfield as well as forward, so I really enjoyed it.”
Downie’s career in Victoria was so often crippled by injury.
A knee complaint pre-season this year threatened to derail his 2015 campaign, but the 26-year-old bounced back to make an impact with the Suns.
“The warmer weather up here has helped me with my body,’’ Downie said.
“Not having to put up with Bendigo’s cold winter was a big help as was being a full-time footballer… I was able to look after my body and be as professional as I could.
“I strengthened my knee up over a six to eight week program in the pre-season and I didn’t really have any trouble with it for the rest of the year.”
Downie said his leadership role with the Suns reserves had whet his appetite to expand his coaching skills.
“Coming up here I knew my main role was around development and helping out the young guys,’’ he said.
“I really enjoyed the responsibility of working with some quality young players.
“I really enjoy working with those younger players because they’re keen and willing to learn. I’d love to get further into that development coaching.
Hopefully, a door opens down the track.”
Downie played his final game for 2015 last Saturday after the Suns failed to make the NEAFL finals.
He’ll have his season review with the Suns’ coaching staff next week before returning to Victoria to catch up with family and friends.
“Hopefully, I’ll find out then what’s happening with me as far as next year is concerned,’’ Downie, who was on a one-year contract with the Suns, said.
