The state’s second roundtable with foster carers will take place in Bendigo in early September.
Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos said it was vital to listen to the experience of foster carers to learn how best to support them and encourage other local people to care for a child in need.
“We need to recruit more carers to give as many children who cannot live with their own families a home with a caring and supportive family environment,” she said.
“There are times when residential care is unavoidable, but it is my view and the goal of the Government that residential care is a last resort – we are focused on placing young people into home-based care.”
It is part of the government’s Foster Care Attraction, Recruitment and Retention Strategy, aiming to support and encourage more foster carers to step up.
