The Shelbourne-based pacer produced another superb performance at Melton on Sunday, grinding his rivals into the ground to win the Breeders Crown final by two-and-a-half metres from Kiwi rival Follow The Stars.
Menin Gate became the first three-year-old to win the Victorian Derby, Queensland Derby, Victorian Super Series Final and Breeders Crown in the same season.
“You can’t knock him, he’s just a bloody good horse,” an elated trainer Larry Eastman said of Menin Gate.
“I’m not going to say he’s a champion because people use that word too loosely, but maybe I can say he’s a champion three-year-old.”
Menin Gate had to work hard to find the lead, but once he was there driver Chris Alford allowed the three-year-old to bowl along.
He reeled off an opening half mile of 60.7 seconds before lifting the tempo with a third quarter of 28.6 seconds.
Menin Gate’s main rival Follow The Stars was sitting behind him on the fence and looked capable of outsprinting him in the straight.
Menin Gate had other ideas, powering home in 27.3 seconds to deny the Kiwi star.
“He (Menin Gate) flew the flag for Australia today… the Kiwis had won four finals in a row prior to his race,’’ Eastman said. “They had the chance to beat him, but they couldn’t.”
Menin Gate’s Birchip-based owners relished the opportunity to celebrate a fourth Group One victory.
“There’ll be no work done in Birchip this week,’’ Eastman said with a chuckle.
