The Geelong blues-rock band returned to Bendigo last year for the blues festival after a band hiatus.

Since then, the four-man band has played a handful of gigs including a BBRMF showcase fundraiser.

“We are looking forward to coming back and playing more of lead up to the blues festival,” lead singer Johnny Hawken said.

Hawken said after a line-up change and time learning new songs, they got in touch with BBRMF founder Colin Thompson.

“We used to play in Bendigo every now and then when there used to just be a couple of pubs,” Hawken said.

“But we have been playing more and more in Bendigo because it has a great music scene.

“You have a range of places like Black Swan, Gold Dust, Gold Mines and The Rifle.

“In Geelong there is only a very small blues scene. A lot of acts tend to be more contemporary rock like Triple J.”

The Mojo Corner were drawn to blues-rock because of their parents’ listening habits.

“All our influences come from what we grew up with,” Hawken said.

“Our parents listened to people like Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, BB King and John Lee Hooker.

“Plus when you have a harmonica player in your band it’s hard to stay away from blues.”

In their five years playing together, The Mojo Corner has played at a number of festival around the state and nation.

“We played the Echuca Blues Festival this year and the Queenscliff Music Festival as well as a few smaller festivals,” Hawken said.

“We have also played on the Queenscliff Blues Train. Occasionally (harmonica player) Rory Miller and I play as a duo because it suits something like the train or Bendigo’s blues tram.”

The Mojo Corner released one album – titled Trouble – two years ago and are working to record another at the end of the year.

“Trouble is on Spotify, iTunes and Soundcloud, so people can get a look at us,” Hawken said.

“But we have a bunch of songs we have been playing for six or 12 months but haven’t recorded and some newer ones as well.

“People can expect something high energy and fun that gets feet tapping, and makes you want to dance and drink whiskey.”

The Mojo Corner play at Gold Dust in Williamson Street on Friday, September 4, from 9pm.

They will also play at the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival later this year.
