Fagan was born in Bendigo and specialises in Spanish and classical music.
“My parents moved away when I was pretty young but I’m hoping to play a few more shows in Bendigo,” he said.
“It’s been about six years since I played a show here. I would like to play in the Sacred Heart Cathedral as well as St Paul’s.”
Fagan said his grandfather and great uncle were both great musicians who performed a lot in Bendigo in the 1920s.
His new album Virtuoso was recorded in dedication to them.
“It has music like Flight of the Bumblebee on it and a lot of Spanish, Celtic and classical music,” Fagan said.
“When I was young I was inspired by The Beatles and got lessons from my family and sisters who played guitar a bit.
“I have had some great opportunities and studied at Victorian College of the Arts and in England and America.”
One of the most memorable opportunities was when Fagan toured with Scottish comedian Billy Connelly in 2000.
“It was about 50 dates and at the end of the tour he gave me one of his banjos,” he said. “I’m heading to America in September and recording an album of Celtic music in Kansas with the banjo he gave me.
“All the proceeds that come from the album will go to Parkinsons Australia, which is the disease Connelly suffers from.”
Audiences will experience a wide range of musical genres when Fagan plays in Bendigo in September.
“It is Spanish guitar at its core. With all that Flamenco strumming I find it most complete guitar style,” he said.
“I do a bit of shredding, play some Celtic finger style, throw in some ukulele and modern popular. But I mainly focusing on Virtuoso album which is about to be released in America.”
Matthew Fagan plays at St Pauls Cathedral Hall in Myers Street, Bendigo, on September 13 at 2.30pm. Tickets cost $25.
