The automatic doors will replace the existing glass foyers, which were installed in the 1990s.
Mount Alexander Shire Council sustainable communities director Vicky Mason said the ornate metal gates would be retained but altered slightly to comply with the building code.
“The works will reduce air flow and heat loss throughout the building to help improve comfort for staff, visitors and volunteers,” Ms Mason, said.
“The works have been carefully designed to meet regulatory requirements while preserving the heritage values of the building.”
The Castlemaine Visitor Information Centre, located inside the Market Building, will remain open to the public for the duration of the works.
Access to the building will change throughout the works and signage will direct visitors to the correct entrance, Ms Mason said.
Works will start at the entrance on Mostyn Street in mid-August and are expected to be completed by October.
Built in 1862, the Market Building is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register as a rare 19th Century market.
“The Market Building is one of our shire’s most significant buildings,” said Ms Mason.
“As host to a wide range of cultural and community events and a first stop for many visitors to the region, it is a wonderful asset for our community.”
“The works are part one of a three stage project that we hope funding becomes available in the future.”
