Since he took up weight training in Cohuna just over 18 months ago, Johnson has added considerable size to his legs and upper body.
The 18-year-old took on a personal training role at Doherty’s Gym in Bendigo in the new year and has steadily worked toward the August 29 contest.
“To compete in a bodybuilding show was something I always wanted to do,” Johnson said.
He will step on to the Ulumbarra Theatre stage to flex in the junior bodybuilding (under-23) class.
Johnson said a lot of his focus in training at the High Street gym was on his legs.
Reps on the leg extension machine, tricep pushdown, seated row, lat pulldown, bench press, bicep curls and more are all part of his training regime.
The teenager’s workouts are six days a week and vary between two and three hours.
“The biggest challenge for me is the diet,” Johnson said of preparations for the event.
Doherty’s Gym Bendigo will be represented by Johnson and Ryan Geier, men’s physique, at the Country Classic.
Tickets for the Country Classic Bendigo are $25 and available by logging onto www.ifbb.vic.com
The show starts at 6pm and features a variety of men’s and women’s divisions.
The Country Classic Bendigo doubles as qualifiers for the Olympia Amateur Australia to be held in November and the Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic next March.
