The metallic Peugeot was stopped and searched by police at around 5pm Thursday on a suburban road some 13 kilometers from the bush land were a massive search and rescue operation had been conducted since Wednesday afternoon.
The car was towed from the crime scene on Hermitage Road, Maiden Gully, at 6.30pm.
Bendigo police superintendent Mick West said it was a routine divisional van which found the 18-year-old girl and the 30-year-old man who was taken into custody.
“There were a couple of clues that we were looking for – a particular coloured vehicle – and the divisional van came across it doing some good work,” superintendent West said.
“They were just out on patrol, however there was a snippet of information that came in that turned out to be very fortuitous.”
