The Regional Constitution Convention is a free public event offered to develop a greater understanding of Australian culture and history.
Bendigo Senior Secondary College student council co-president Gabriela Giggins said she expected the event to be a highlight for the community.
“We’re excited to bring people this free event to discuss important ideas that face us daily,” she said.
“Our hope is that such discussions will bring us closer to a more inclusive society.”
The event is based around the theme of defining national identity, and there are a variety of speakers that will use their expertise in fields such as the arts and human rights to do this.
A Q&A panel discussion based around building a more inclusive society will give participants the opportunity to debate and discuss ideas with the guest speakers.
Schools from around the region are invited to participate in informal discussion groups to develop their understanding of what it means to be Australia.
A free barbecue lunch is provided for students who participate in the event.
BSSC student council co-president Eva Marchingo said the event would be incredibly informative.
From 9am to about 3.15pm the event will be on,” she said.
“Open to all ages from Year 9 upwards.
“This year’s theme is around our nationality and national identity.
“It’s a really good day for politics students, sociology students or history students to learn more.
“Basically just a way of increasing understanding the background of Australia.
“It is an opportunity to learn the history behind the politics and history that form our national identity.”
Ms Marchingo said the event would offer talks from four speakers.
She said there would be a panel discussion, focus groups and group activities as well as performances by Bendigo Senior Secondary Students.
“I guess it’s a day for students and the general public to get a little bit more out of what they would otherwise through their education,” she said.
A free barbeque lunch will be provided for students invited from the region, while public guests will have access to the Ulumbarra Cafe.
Students wishing to participate must RSVP to the Regional Constitutional Convention event on Compass to approve your absence, then sign in on the day between 9:00 and 9:30 am.
